Quake Champions to be Free To Play

In a recent interview for the Polygon magazine, Tim Willits  ( the creation director of id Software ) revealed that the upcoming Quake Champions video game will be free to play.

In other words, the game can be downloaded and played for free, however it will be limited to a single champion: Ranger, the main character of the first game of the series. Gamers will be able to unlock other champions by using the in-game currency which can be earned pretty easily in Quake Champions matches.

Alternatively, the Favor ( this is the name of the in-game currency ) can be invested in the so called backpacks ( loot boxes from other similar games ) through which you can access run challenges. Once completed, these challenges will provide relics with the help of which players can unlock new skins and new champions. This way, id Software hopes to see dedicated players not reaching into their pockets to pay real money for additional champions.

Those of you who are used with the classic purchase system of a game ( Premium ) can go for the Champions Pack ( the full, paid version of the game ). This Premium version comes with access to all champions from the initial cast of the game. The price for this package was not revealed yet but we guess it will be lower than $60.

Regardless if you choose to purchase the paid version or you rather get the free to play version of Quake Champions, all players will have access to all maps, weapons and will share the same brackets in online matches.

And because we’re talking about the Quake arsenal, take a look at the video below to see what’s in store for you:

Quake Champions is developed by id Software in partnership with Saber Interactive especially for PC, using the id Tech 6 engine ( the same graphics engine that powers the DOOM video game ), the game being designed to run at a frame rate of at least 120 frames per second. The game will benefit – very soon – from a closed beta testing session and if you want to take part you have to fill out a form available on the official Quake Champions website.
