The Oscar Awards, as you probably know, is the biggest event of the movie industry in Hollywood. Actors, actresses but also the members of the teams behind the camera are being recognized and rewarded for their hard work in the past year.
As it happens every year, journalists and bookies from all over the world are making predictions about who’s going to win the Oscar in 2017. Some say the winners in the main categories are set in stone, but there are chances to see some twists.
The Golden Globes and other major awards provide important signals for the Oscar awards in the main categories but we might see some surprises here and there.
One thing we know for sure: the “La la Land” romantic musical, which tells the story of a rising actress and struggling jazz singer seems to be one of the favorites to win the award.
With 14 nominations, matching the record set by “Titanic” and “All About Eve”, the “La La Land” musical is also the favorite of bookies and movie experts to win the Best Movie Oscar award.
According to some sources, the movie has 85% chances of winning and it wouldn’t be a surprise considering that at the Golden Globes 2017 this movie received seven nominations and went home with seven awards.
“Moonlight” also has high chances to win the Oscar this year, the story of a black man from Miami, as well as “Hidden Figures” a movie about African American women who work at NASA. The “Manchester by the Sea” drama who is much loved by movie critics has small chances of winning the award for Best Movie.
“Arrival”, “Hacksaw Ridge”, “Fences”, “Hell or High Water” and “Lion” are this year’s nominations for Best Movie.
Damien Chazelle, 32 years old, the man behind “La La Land” seems to be the favorite for Best Director, with 87% chances of winning. His main rival is Barry Jenkins with 9% chances of winning, followed by Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea”
Although the Academy has proven that Mel Gibson was forgiven for his past mistakes and he received a nomination for directing “Hacksaw Ridge”, Mel has only 1,14% chances of taking home the Oscar award in 2017.
Dennis Villenueve is also nominated for Best Director, for his work on “Arrival”.
Although it was believed that Natalie Portman has high chances of winning her second Oscar for playing Jaqueline Kennedy, Emma Stone has surpassed her as it seems Emma has higher chances of going home with the award for Best actress in a leading role for her work on “La la Land”. Emma’s only rival seems to be French actress Isabelle Huppert for her role in “Elle”.
Actresses Ruth Negga ( “Loving” ) and Meryl Streep – who holds the record for most nominations and wins – ( “Florence Foster Jenkings” ) are also nominated for Best actress in a leading role.
Emma Stone’s partner, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, doesn’t have as many chances as he is just the third favorite to win the Oscar. Still, unlike in he past, it’s very hard to set a clear favorite for the Best actor in a leading role category as it seems it’s a close one between Denzen Washington for “Fences” and Cassey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea”. It remains to be seen who’s going home happy.
Seems like nothing is going to stop Viola Davis to go home with the Oscar award for Best Actress in a supporting role for her role in “Fences” as she has 93% chances of winning. Moreover, Viola Davis got the Critics’ Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globe and BAFTA award for this role so only is Oscar is missing to complete the collection.
The Best Actress in a supporting role also includes nominations for Naomie Harris ( “Moonlight” ), Nicole Kidman ( “Lion” ), Octavia Spencer ( “Hidden Figures” ) and Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea”).
Things are not as clear for the Best Actor in a supporting role category but there is a favorite, precisely Mahershala Ali for his role in “Moon Light” however he is closely followed by Dev Patel especially after winning the Golden Globe for “Lion”.
The best actor in a supporting role category also includes nominations for Jeff Bridges ( “Hell or High Water”), Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”).
As always, there are a lot of variables concerning this year’s Oscar Awards and it remains to be seen who’s going home with the award.
The 89th edition of the Oscar Awards will take place on Sunday evening at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Until then, if you haven’t managed to see all the nominated movies we suggest you get cracking and start watching them!
